UK Boosts Nigeria’s AI Governance and Digital Growth

UK Boosts Nigeria's AI Governance and Digital Growth - ai governance
The British Standards Institution (BSI) visited Nigeria to support AI governance initiatives.

The UK has reaffirmed its support for Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda through a series of engagements focused on artificial intelligence governance. This follows a recent visit by the British Standards Institution (BSI). The initiative included an Executive Workshop on AI Governance and Standards, jointly organized with Nigeria’s National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) under the UK Government’s Digital Access Programme. The workshop brought together senior government leaders, regulators, and technology practitioners.

It aimed to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity for responsible AI adoption and oversight. Participants explored practical methods for implementing internationally recognized standards in AI risk management, assurance, and accountability. This supports Nigeria’s goal of becoming a leading AI economy. The collaboration marks three years of partnerships between BSI and Nigerian institutions. These partnerships promote standards as a driver of economic growth and digital innovation.

Workshop Highlights and Key Standards

The three-day training session in Abuja emphasized the role of international standards in enabling safe and trustworthy AI deployment. Attendees examined frameworks such as ISO/IEC 42001 for AI Management Systems and ISO/IEC 23894 for AI Risk Management. They also reviewed other emerging guidance documents. They discussed the future of AI governance in Nigeria. These enablers unlock the benefits of emerging technologies while ensuring safety, security, and responsibility.

Dr. Olubunmi Ajala, National Coordinator of NCAIR, emphasized building sovereign institutional capacity for AI governance. They thanked the UK and BSI for their sustained support. The event also marked the launch of a permanent cross-government Community of Practice. This community aims to advance standards-led AI development across Nigerian public institutions.

Expanding the UK-Nigeria Standards Partnership

The collaboration extends beyond AI to include digital trust, data governance, cybersecurity, smart infrastructure, and digital public services. BSI works closely with Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), and Nigeria Data Protection Council (NDPC). They have provided training and policy guidance on applying international standards to emerging technologies. These tools build trust, enhance cybersecurity, and improve interoperability. All are critical for responsible technology deployment. The partnership’s scope may further expand into electronic waste management and e-health. This reflects shared priorities in sustainable digital development.
