
Rocket Lab recently executed a rapid response mission, launching the Victus Haze mission just 16 hours and 42 minutes after receiving the US Space Force’s Notice to Launch, beating the previous record by more than 10 hours, according to the company.
The launch was part of a plan announced by the Space Force in 2024 to launch two satellites into low-Earth orbit, with Rocket Lab having a satellite on standby to launch on short notice once military officials gave the order.
Rocket Lab did not provide a livestream of the launch, as it does for most of its missions, with the only public indication of an impending launch being the release of a warning for pilots and sailors to steer clear of the rocket’s flight path.
NASA’s infrastructure at Kennedy Space Center is aging and approaching its limit due to increased demand from private companies, including SpaceX and Blue Origin, with a new report from the Office of the Inspector General finding problems with supply lines for helium and nitrogen, as well as concerns about a six-decade-old electricity distribution system for NASA’s launch pads.
Officials are also concerned that the number of annual launches will reach or exceed the number of days in a year by late 2028 or 2029, with NASA and private companies working to address these challenges and ensure continued access to space.
A recent analysis details the costs of the SLS program, with the Universal Stage Adapter, for example, originally contracted for $131 million but having grown to $353 million, with a delivery date delayed to September 2028, and the inspector general’s report projecting that the project would likely cost $497 million and not be ready until May 2030.
The California Science Center has accomplished what many thought impossible: stacking a space shuttle orbiter with its external tank and twin solid rocket boosters without using a NASA facility intended for that purpose, with the Space Shuttle Endeavour configured to display its payload bay doors and payloads as they would have been for a mission to the International Space Station.
Upcoming launches include the Pegasus XL on June 27, the Falcon 9 on June 28, and the Falcon 9 on June 29, with companies and space agencies around the world continuing to push the boundaries of space exploration and development.
SpaceX is also working on a new response system for emergency situations.
